Waun end campaign on a high

WAUNARLWYDD chalked up a bonus point in winning 28-23 at Uwic in division one west, their final game of the season.

The students led 10-8 at half-time but Waun’s three second-half tries proved enough.

Wing Ben James, no. 8 and skipper Nathan hart, centre Daniel Fox and scrum-half Lee Evans got the touchdowns, with Evans kicking one conversion and a penalty and fly-half Josh Hammett adding a penalty.

With third place guaranteed beforehand, Carmarthen Athletic had little to play for at home to lowly Tondu and came a cropper 30-29.

Several squad players were given a run out and the Athletic produced their worst display for months as Tondu roared into a 27-12 lead early in the second half.

Some changes in personnel swung the game in the Athletic’s favour and they clawed back the deficit to lead 29-27 with a couple of minutes to go before Tondu struck with a penalty in the last minute to snatch a deserved win.

The home side outscored Tondu by five tries to three but paid the penalty for missing three of the conversions.

Centres Viv Jenkins and Rhys Lewis, scrum-half Rhys Lane, no. 8 Gareth Bennett and full-back Mike Sauro got the tries, with Sauro converting two of them.

All Tondu’s tries were converted and they also landed three penalties.

The Athletic’s youth team are in action on Friday night at Carmarthen Park (7pm) when they take on Kidwelly in a replay of their Welsh Youth Cup semi-final — their first game a week last Saturday ended in a 10-10 draw.

The winners will take on Tondu in the final.
