Blue tits and most small birds require the box located no less than 2m above ground height possibly attached to a wall, fence or tree. Robins and wrens favor to nest below 2m in hedgerow.

The size of the hole in the box will also influence the type of bird that chooses to nest there. The tit family typically likes 25mm diameter holes and robins favor open fronted containers.

The view angle of the video camera will also determine the scope of the image attained. Typically look for a view angle of no less than 60 degrees to see from the base of the nest box to above the nest or if placed above the nest then this will provide a view of the whole nest.

KU basketball on its perch with a depleted nest

LAWRENCE | on the day that big 12 coaches picked the Kansas Jayhawks to win the regular-season conference championship — an indication that not much has changed — it became clear at KU’s media day Thursday that things actually couldn’t be more different.

Bill Self talked about tempering expectations. Then he said that he wasn’t holding his breath that freshmen Ben McLemore and Jamari Traylor would be cleared by the NCAA, which means there’s a chance current and former walk-ons will have to play. Self’s go-to phrase to describe the KU fans in panic mode is “the sky is falling,” and now might be time to take cover.

The Jayhawks need leadership, so it should be a good thing they have a point guard who has started 89 games and will be their first four-year starter since Aaron Miles. Yes, it should be a good thing they have Tyshawn Taylor.

“He’s the one with the keys,” KU guard Elijah Johnson said. “He’s gotta start the car and drive. We’ll get in.”

Where Taylor will take the 2011-12 Jayhawks is anybody’s guess. He’ll have the help of juniors like Thomas Robinson and Johnson, but they both said Taylor is this team’s leader.

That idea will surely scare some of those who have been observers the last three years. Drama has followed Taylor. he exceeded expectations as a freshman but was one of the ringleaders in the fight with the football team during his sophomore year and talked later that year about how he didn’t know what his role was on the court. last February, Taylor was suspended two games for a violation of team rules.

He came back to the team and played his best basketball down the stretch for the Jayhawks, who swear by Taylor and say that the public incidents during his career aren’t an accurate portrayal of his character.

“To be honest, I’ve never seen the way other people look at Tyshawn,” Robinson said. “Tyshawn’s not a bad person at all. He’s human. he made mistakes. I don’t think people should hold that against him, which I feel like they did in the past. Tyshawn’s a leader, and he’s been a leader. It’s just now it’s gonna be more obvious.”

Even Self agreed that Taylor has been misrepresented, saying that Taylor’s been a victim of some of his gaffes becoming public. With Taylor, it seems nothing has been dealt with in-house, which is always a coach’s preference.

“I do think he’s ready,” Self said. “I think he’s matured. I think he’s grown up. He’s wanted this to be his deal, but it couldn’t be this deal with Sherron (Collins) around, and it couldn’t be his deal with the (Morris) twins around. Tyshawn wanted it, and now he’s got it, and we’ll see how he reacts to it.”

Taylor’s year of setting the tone has just begun, but Johnson says his teammate is off to a good start in sending the right message to KU’s young players.

“He’s learned,” Johnson said, “and you can tell because he tries to warn people about stuff he’s done before and seen people do. he just doesn’t want people to make that mistake. he cares too much. That’s a leader to me.”

Taylor has experienced more than most players in a college career, not the least of which is being a part of three of KU’s seven straight big 12 regular-season titles. it will be largely up to Taylor whether or not this Kansas team falls in line with tradition or becomes a rare disappointment.

“I’ve been thinking about that a little bit more than everybody else,” Taylor said. “I’ve been here, I’m a senior, and I just want to get four (titles), man. I don’t want to be the one that ends it.”

The Myth and Truth of Red Bird Nest

Bird nest soap is a famous Chinese health cuisine. It can improve one’s health, make one’s skin radiant and bright, strengthen lungs and prolong life.

There are grossly three types of bird nest namely white, black and red ones. The white one is made by a kind of swiftlet called Aerodramus fuciphagus whereas the black one by Aerodramus maximus. The red nest is made by Aerodrumus fuciphagus normally in caves. The red nest is said to be best quality as it can produce the best effects. Hence, red nest is sold at a premium price.

The myth about the red bird nest has been lingering in the Chinese community. some say that the swiftlets mix their saliva with blood when making the nests; other says that due to frequent harvesting by the farmers, the swiftlets have to work too hard until they bleed at the throat during bird nest construction. The fact however, is that hardened blood is black in color.

According to the observation of experienced harvestors, the nests found near the entrance of the caves are white in color. Going deeper inside the cave, the nests are yellow in color and near the deepest end a golden red color.

The coloration of genuine yellow and red bird nest is due to interaction of the nest with the cave wall and absorption of the natural minerals found in the wall. A red nest with uniform yellow and red color is rarely found because only one side of the nest is in contact with the cave wall. It could be due to the swiftlets feed on red algae. In such a case the color of the nest is grayish pink instead of simply yellow or red.

There is another rumor namely the red nest is made by the house swiftlets. this is totally untrue as the house swiftlets only feed on insects and not algae. Only cave swiftlets make a red nest. whether it makes the nest for the first time or numerous times, it produces only one type of bird nest namely white one. The rumor may be spread by the unscrupulous businessmen who adulterated color into the white nest or make the white nest becomes red one by fumigation.

In conclusion, one must be careful in choosing red nests as the natural one may bring benefits while the fake one may cause harm to one’s health.
