LACROSSE: The Woodlands wins four games against national elites in Florida – Your Houston News: Sports
The Woodlands lacrosse team recently traveled to Florida for spring training in preparation for an intense upcoming district schedule.
The Highlanders played well enough to notch a 4-0 record against some stiff competition from around the country, coach Dave Seale said.
In its first game, the Woodlands beat Southborough, Mass.’s St. Mark’s 12-5 on March 14.
The next day featured a doubleheader against Bernards (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Fort Collins (Fort Collins, Colo.). the Highlanders picked up two victories by counts of 12-8 and 9-5, respectively.
The Woodlands concluded its trip with an 11-7 triumph over the Colonials of Morristown, N.J.
Spencer Willey, who recorded six goals and seven assists, led the Highlanders’ scoring attack. Ian Seale (nine goals, two assists), Sean McCanna (eight, two), Tyler Murphy (six, three) and Ben Lipscomb (four, two) also keyed the offense.
“Playing without our defensive short-stick midfielders and our top one-on-one defenseman, the remaining defensemen played quite well,” Seale said. “Junior Clayton Lowell was consistent throughout the four games. Sophomore John Hearne saw his first varsity action in the goal and played very well as did the varsity starter, sophomore Hayden Stanifer.
“Freshmen Pierce Milton and sophomore Phoenix Jones stepped up to help the defensive effort. Sophomore Cameron Babin played both close defense and short-stick middie and contributed at both positions. our best defensive effort came against Fort Collins, a traditionally strong program. Freshman Jake Williams did a nice job on faceoffs throughout all of our games.”
The Woodlands hosts Lamar at 2 p.m. Saturday for its annual Jack Schantz Memorial Lacrosse Day.
