Thousands of Christian faithful in El Paso will observe good Friday and the Passion of Christ in personal solemn prayer, attending services or making the annual trek to Mount Cristo Rey.
And then they will rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus Christ by attending sunrise or regular services on Easter Sunday.
Here is a roundup of religious events around the city, Friday through Sunday.
The Rev. Rick Matty, rector of St. Patrick Cathedral, said the Catholic church will once again mark good Friday with a 2-mile procession in the Stations of the Cross.
Participants will meet at 9 a.m. across from the church, at Arizona and Stanton streets, and proceed around the neighborhood. Catholics will take turns carrying a large wooden cross.
People will stop to pray at 14 stations, which will highlight a theme related to social justice, including dignity of the human person; the plight of migrants and refugees; poverty and homelessness; lack of access to health care; and peace, Matty said in an email.
“The gospel of Jesus teaches us to serve the poor and marginalized in our community. We walk in prayer as an expression of solidarity with our sisters and brothers who are the faces of the suffering Christ today,” he said.
Deacon José Luis Sánchez said this is the 10th year the parish will hold the via Crucis through neighborhood streets.
“At last year’s procession, approximately 700 people participated,” he said.
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, bring protection from the sun and carry a bottle of water.
