DeLuca wins at Petoskey
PETOSKEY — Johannesburg-Lewiston senior Meridith DeLuca continues to emerge as one of the top Division 4 runners in the state.DeLuca won a big invitational Saturday, acing the 16-team field at the Petoskey Invitational with a time of 20:00. the field in the invitational featured bigger schools like Alpena, Petoskey and Charlevoix.the Cardinals had four runners crack the top 25. Nadine Peterson was 12th (21:57), Nikki Bush was 13th (22:03) and Katie Kierczynski was 25th (24:12). in the 9-10 race, Chloe Johnston placed 23rd with a time of 24:08.J-L’s Andrew Morehouse placed 15th among 9-10 boys with a time of 18:48.Gaylord sweeps at Delta InvitationalUNIVERSITY CENTER — it was a great day for the Gaylord cross-country team Saturday at the Delta Invitational.the Blue Devils swept the Division 2 race, winning on both the boys’ and girls’ sides. it was the Gaylord boys’ 13th victory at Delta in the past 17 years.“Those were some of the fastest times we’ve had in the last 10 years,” Gaylord coach Jeff Kalember said of the unique two-mile race.Junior Charlend Howard was Gaylord’s top finisher taking sixth among all Division 1 and 2 runners with a time of 10:17. that equaled the time that Chris Olds turned in during his All-State year of 2003.Junior Nate Fischer wasn’t far behind, taking 12th with a time of 10:23. Kalember said senior Jake Pasternak (27th, 10:51) and junior Ian Callison (32nd, 10:56) both turned in their best races of the season. Senior Sean Hope was solid (45th, 11:30) while freshman Collin Monusko (46th, 11:34) made the difference in Gaylord’s win against second-place Midland Bullock Creek. Junior Chris Ryan turned in a solid time of 11:40 as the No. 7 runner.the girls showed a tight back between runners one and five, led by senior Megan Borgeson, who placed 11th with a time of 12:47. also placing for the Blue Devils was junior Geena Duff (13th, 12:50), senior Paige Hypio (15th, 12:58), junior Katelynn Dreyer (18th, 13:06), junior Maria Warren (23rd, 13:20), junior Noelle Warren (25th, 13:23) and senior Nicole Wehner (40th, 13:51). this was the Gaylord girls’ 17th win in a row at Delta, dating back to coach Dave Wenzel’s dominating teams of the 1990s.in the junior varsity races, Ellen Seidell came out strong with a solid fifth-place finish out of a field that included more than 180 raceers. “it was Ellen’s first race and she competed like a seasoned veteran to place so high,” Kalember said.Megan Stempky also had a strong race, taking eighth place.St. Mary competes at Class D inviteCENTRAL LAKE — the St. Mary cross-country team competed alongside teams from across Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula Saturday at the rainy Central Lake Class D Invitational. Both teams turned in respectable finishes with the boys taking fifth and the girls placing eighth.Senior Luke Wisniewski led a well-rounded boys group by taking 23rd with a time of 18:56. He was followed by junior Dylan Masko (35th, 19:38), sophomore Adam Makarewicz (41st, 19:56), eighth-grader Nick Masko (42nd, 19:57) and senior Luke Brown (47th, 20:11).Junior Chrissy Smith was the girls’ top finisher taking 16th with a time of 22:32. also for the Snowbirds, freshman Savannah Sullivan, freshman Natalie Burzynski, senior Karli Jacob and senior Katie LeBlanc also scored. LeBlanc turned in a personal best time.
