Bent County community hopeful for Fort Lyon – The Pueblo Chieftain: Colorado State And Regional News

LAS ANIMAS — On Feb. 15, 2011, it was announced that the Fort Lyon Correctional Facility in bent County would be decommissioned to save the state money.

The news was met with shock and fear by the 207 employees the correctional facility employed as well as the surrounding community.

“In a metro area, losing 207 jobs doesn’t sound like a whole lot,” Lisa Trigilio, executive director of the bent County Development Foundation said. “But in a small community like ours, losing 207 jobs is devastating.”

The correctional facility was one of the three largest employers in bent County and the highest paying employer.

According to an official analysis of the proposal to close Fort Lyon prepared by Fred Crowley of Crowley’s Consulting, inc., eliminating jobs decreased total wages in bent County by approximately $10.4 million a year. That accounts for 27.1 percent of all wages in bent County.

The closing of the correctional facility had an adverse effect on the local housing industry as well.

Trigilio said when it was announced Fort Lyon would be shut down, many of its employees either left to find new work or exercised their option to transfer to other cities that had correctional facilities, like Trinidad.

“A lot of people left for jobs at the Department of Corrections,” Trigilio said. “And, obviously, when people leave that means houses are becoming empty.”

Mabel Hansen, a broker at local real estate company Hansen Realty, said the area had never been a booming market but it really hurt when it was announced the correctional facility would be shut down.

“People have stopped buying in Las Animas,” Hansen said. “It’s even worse now . . . home prices continue to drop.”

Bent County, however, received good news Friday.

It was awarded $5 million in seed money to kick-start a new endeavor at Fort Lyon — a housing and treatment center for homeless military veterans.

The community is optimistic about the future of the facility but knows there’s still a lot of hard work to be done.

“It’s an exciting announcement and it’s exciting the governor agreed to that,” Trigilio said. “It kind of feels like the stars are beginning to align for us.”

Bent County Commissioner bill Long stressed that there is still a lot of work ahead.

“Different funding pieces must come together beyond the $5 million to make this a viable long-term solution,” he said. “That is what we are working on now.”

Long said it’s too early to tell exactly how much funding the new facility will need but added that it will take several million dollars annually to make it work.

He also added that the Veterans Administration has multi-year grant programs bent County will work for that could help fund the facility.

Bent County also has backup plans in case the homeless veteran center plan falls through.

Long said the facility is in terrific shape and could be utilized for a number of different things, including as a training facility for emergency responders.

Still, the homeless veteran center is bent County’s primary focus.

“Providing services for veterans is what our community is accustomed to doing.” Long said. “I’m very pleased the governor kept his word.”

Bent Shouldn’t Be Funny, But Is, Wednesday, Mar. 21 – YourFamilyViewer.com

BENT

Friendly Rating: Teens and older elementary

Safety Rating: Endless chatter about sex, so this may have to be an after the kids are in bed show

Quality Rating: it works. I don’t get it, but it works.

New series premieres on NBC at 9 p.m.

I have to say, I was dreading Bent – the previews had everything I either hate or are tired to death of. Endless joking about the constant need for sex, about how uptight she is and how loose he is. the whole they hate each other, then fall in love routine. the kid who’s smarter than her mom and taking care of her. and, indeed, the pilot was more of the same.

But, but, but…  There is something weirdly charming about this tale of a recently divorced mom and a contractor each trying to resurrect themselves after major life changes. Pete (David Walton) may be a womanizer, but he’s also a recovering gambling addict trying to work his 12-Step program and rebuild his business. Alex (Amanda Peet) is an intense lawyer whose ex is now in jail for securities fraud. she gives in and hires Pete against her better judgement to fix up the house she has recently down-sized to.

Maybe it’s because I am in the middle of a re-muddle, myself. maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for the whole redemption and recovery theme. maybe because there’s a depth to these characters that you don’t usually find in these kinds of shows. But somehow, this actually works. Even Jeffrey Tambour’s utterly hysterical turn as Pete’s Actor father (played perfectly straight, which just makes it all the more fun) couldn’t rescue this show if the rest of it was that bad. But somehow, it’s not.

And believe me, safety-wise, it’s all about the sex talk. Pete can’t keep it in his pants and Amanda won’t let go. I’m also not thrilled with the implication that you can’t function without sex. No, it’s not always fun to do without. But it is perfectly possible to live a fulfilling life without sexual intercourse, and that is a healthy message for our kids. the idea that they have to have sex is the dangerous one, which could lead to all kinds of negative relationships, etc.But even with those strikes against it, this still remains a charming little romantic comedy that should probably be left until after the young ‘uns are in bed. or at least watched with your kids so that you can put the positive spin on it.

‘Bent’ gets treated like it’s already broken

The way NBC is treating its newest show, “Bent,” you’d think it was ashamed to be seen with it.

Unfortunately titled – if you miss the explanation in the pilot, you may not catch it again – and even more unfortunately scheduled – in back-to-back episodes for three weeks, following “Are you There, Chelsea?” and opposite ABC’s “Modern Family” and Fox’s “American Idol” – “Bent” isn’t so much being added to NBC’s lineup tomorrow as burned off.

Which is strange, because this unexpectedly charming, well-cast romantic comedy from Tad Quill (“Scrubs,” “Spin City”) represents something rare enough on NBC: a half-hour whose appeal might conceivably extend beyond the cable-sized viewership of savagely smart but more insular series like “30 Rock” and “Community.”

Assuming anyone ever sees it, that is.

Amanda Peet (“Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”) is Alex Meyers, a recently divorced lawyer with a daughter named Charlie (Joey King) and a yen for a new kitchen.

David Walton (“Perfect Couples,” “The Loop”) is Pete Riggins, surfer dude and recovering gambling addict and (wait for it) hot contractor.

Before you can say “Who’s the Boss?” “Bent” has introduced Alex’s wild-child sister (Margo Harshman), Pete’s father (Jeffrey Tambor) – an unsuccessful actor whose motto, “Bent but not broken,” is the basis for the title – and the members of Pete’s justifiably suspicious construction crew. (Among them: “Friday Night Lights’ ” Jesse Plemons, once again teamed with a ladies’ man named Riggins, and J.B. Smoove of “Curb your Enthusiasm.”)

I wasn’t a huge fan of much beyond Tambor when I first saw “Bent’s” pilot last summer, but NBC sent out everything it had for review and before I knew it, I’d watched all six in one evening.

And on what I laughably call my own time. I laughed. In spite of myself and in spite, too, of NBC, which may no longer be able to distinguish comedy from kindling.

Trend alert: Like some other missing males this season, Alex’s ex pulled some white-collar shenanigans. But at least he’s just in prison, like the Bernie Madoff-like dad on CBS’ “2 Broke Girls,” not disgraced and dead, like Leslie Bibb’s Amanda on ABC’s “GCB.”

Bottom line: The premise – boy meets girl, boy takes forever redoing girl’s kitchen – may not sound fresh, but there’s something cooking in “Bent” that’s worth hanging out for.

What: “Bent”

When: 8 and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21

Where: NBC

Q: how has motherhood altered you?

A: “I’m fatter, I’m saggier. And I’m still a jealous, desirous person. (laughs) we cruise my viewpoint on things was altered some-more by being with David than carrying children, in terms of work. we used to do projects meditative it would be a rising pad to something, though when we met David, he was like, ‘stop doing that, do it usually if we wish to do it.’”

Q: what do we cruise your large break?

A: “‘the whole Nine Yards,’ hands down. it was a good purpose – a agreement torpedo who was spooky with being an consultant agreement killer. the film did unequivocally good and during a time, we didn’t comprehend how special and singular it was. so singular that it’s never happened again! (laughs) If that ever happened now, we would be celebration champagne and doing cartwheels. At a time, we usually didn’t even know.”

Q: Innocence can be a good thing.

A: “oh, we was unequivocally trusting and took a purpose unequivocally seriously. Matthew Perry and Bruce Willis would be going out and carrying fun in Montreal. we was like, ‘I need to figure out what my design is in this stage tomorrow!’”

Q: Television is such a unsafe and variable business. will we be unhappy if a uncover doesn’t get renewed?

A: “Yeah, though I’ve been doing this for a prolonged time. we feel like I’ve been around a revolving doorway and separate out a other side and come behind around again. I’m used to this feeling and I’m used to being in this position. we have my health, my children’s health and my husband’s health. the comparison we get, a some-more we feel if we have (those 3 things) afterwards we’re doing unequivocally well.”

Bent Lines May Signal Age-Related Blindness

People who see the world differently with their eyes aren’t necessarily being romantic or cynical. They may be suffering from a serious disease called age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in people over 50.

Indeed, for 30 million people worldwide who have AMD, the world is a different place. Straight lines such as doorframes or posts appear bent while the size and color of objects may appear differently with each eye.

All this is caused by damage to the macula – the light-sensitive part of the eye that gives people their central vision. No one knows why this happens but risk factors for AMD include smoking, hypertension, coronary heart disease, race, sun exposure, and a diet low in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

There are two types of AMD. the dry form affects 90 percent of people but vision deteriorates slowly or not at all. in the less common wet form that affects only 10 percent of people, there is severe vision loss in two to three years. This is caused by abnormal blood vessels that form in the back of the eye and block vision.

As the disease progresses, patients may begin to experience difficulties in performing normal daily tasks such as reading, telling time, or distinguishing colors and facial expressions. furthermore, impaired vision may decrease mobility and increase the risk of injury due to falls – patients with AMD have a 70 percent increased risk of falling at least twice in 12 months, according to Dr. Michael Sickenberg of Hospital Ophtalmique Universitaire Jules Gonin in Switzerland.

Vision impairment as a result of AMD can also significantly reduce the patient’s ability to cope with basic aspects of everyday life and can lead to anxiety, depression, anger, reduced drive, tiredness, and confusion, he added.

Consult an ophthalmologist or eye specialist if you suspect you have AMD. the wet form can be treated by drugs that stop further vision loss.

How To Perform The Bent Over Row Properly

Most typical bodybuilding workouts are too broad since they involve several different body parts at the same time. If you want to target a specific part of your body, then you need to structure your workouts to target that particular muscle or body part. If you want to target your upper back muscle then the muscle building exercise that you need to fit into your workout is the bent over row.

Bent over rows are one of the traditional upper back exercises used by many bodybuilders for a long time. This exercise specifically targets the muscles of the upper back. In order to increase the size of your back muscles and strength as well, it’s important that you learn how to properly perform bent over rows. If you will seriously commit yourself to doing bent rows on a regular basis, you will definitely add size, density and mass to your latissimus dorsi muscle immediately. As a result you will absolutely get the highly desirable and frequently sought after V-taper upper body shape.

In order to attain that much desired V-taper upper body shape, you need to perform bent over rows by following the guidelines listed below:

First you need to make sure to perform some warm-up exercises before jumping into your bent over row work sets. Also, spend some time stretching and take a few minutes to perform some light cardio exercises to get your heart pumping and help to get your muscles properly warmed up to avoid straining your muscles during your workout. When you are done with your warm up exercises and cardio, it’s time to jump into your heavy bent over row work sets.

For your starting position, begin with an overhand grip grabbing the barbell. Make sure that you are spreading your hands slightly wider than shoulder width. Also, take note of the position of your feet. you need to spread your legs apart to about shoulder width, with your knees slightly bent. When you’re done positioning your hands and feet, you need to lean forward to about a 45 degree angle at the waist, while making every effort to keep your upper back straight. Keep in mind that the position of the bar must always be above the knee. If you allow the bar to fall below your knees, there is a good possibility that you will have to bend your power back past 45 degrees opening yourself up to an injury. one of the most important things to keep in mind while performing rows, is to make sure that your back is straight during the entire movement.

During the upward phase of the bent row, you need to exhale then pull the bar up right below your chest. just make sure that you are contracting your core muscles while you pull the weight upward in order to prevent injuring your spine or lower back. Next, you need to move into the second phase of the bent row, where you will be lowering the barbell back to your initial starting position in a slow and controlled manner. Repeat each of these phases for a complete bent over row for somewhere between eight to 12 complete repetitions.

If you want to add muscular size and strength to your upper back, there is no exercise that is more effective than a properly performed bent over row. Read back over these quick bent row tips and commit to incorporating this highly effective back building exercise into your upper body workouts today.

Bent Penis? You May Have Peyronie’s Disease

A bent penis is often than not regarded as a natural phenomena, but what most men, and women for that matter, may not realize is that a bent penis maybe be the result of a treatable condition known as Peyronie’s Disease.

If the bend in your penis is only slight and doesn’t interfere with sexual intercourse or worry the owner of the curved member, then there is nothing you need to worry about, simply be happy with your unique member.

If however the bending of the penis causes painful erections interferes with sexual relations or the man simply wants a straighter appearance to his penis, then the good news is there are now a number of effective treatments to straighten a bent penis.

It is not entirely understood what brings on the condition, it is often related to some damage or trauma to the penis itself. Plaque forms in the penis and in time hardens into a scar tissue like consistency. as the plaque hardness the penis becomes more and more bent when a man has an erection, the bend occurring at the point of the plaque buildup.

There are a number of effective ways to treat Peyronie’s Disease, but before you rush off to book an appointment with your surgeon, there is a natural way to stretch out a bent penis.

Penis stretching devices have been around for a long time, most commonly associated with enlarging the penis (the results of which are debatable), what has now become almost a side effect is they are quite effective in straightening a bent penis.

Essentially, the scar tissue or plaque in found at the point of bend can be stretched out and broken up, this leads to cellular division and stretching which results in more blood filling those cells and in effect stretching out the penis. it works in much the same way African tribal women can stretch their necks and they way in which the youth of today can stretch their ear lobes to amazing diameters.

A regime of daily exercise using a quality stretching device over a period of time will result in your penis gradually straightening out, to the point there is no noticeable curve and the man no longer experiences pain when erect.

As a bonus you will reclaim an inch or two by stretching the curve out, which can also help a man reclaim his confidence in the bed room.

Like most men’s health issues, men tend to sweep them under the carpet and ignore them, Peyronie’s Disease is no exception. The fact that it so easy, discrete and pain less to treat, means men shouldn’t hesitate to get a stretching device and straighten out their bent penis.

Health-Bent

To me, turkey (and most non-duck poultry) is pretty boring. I rant about this often, and maybe you’ve noticed I don’t cook it very often, because in my world: cow beats chicken & pig beats cow. Every. Time. Period.

But today, I think I’ve finally got a cheater’s fix to making, at least turkey legs, deliciously moist and yummy. We’re taking leftover pickle juice and using it like a convenience food. If you think about it, pickle juice is really just a readymade brine. so let’s start using it like one. Toss a couple monster turkey legs in, let the brine do its thing and then roast the beasts until they’re crispy.

Andddddddd, don’t forget to enter our US Wellness Meats $100 Carnivore Contest.

  • 2 turkey legs
  • 1 jar pickle juice (use anything but bread ‘n butter/sweet), preferably naturally fermented pickles like Bubbies

For each 2 turkey legs, you’ll want one jar of leftover pickle juice.

Place ingredients in a large zip-top bag. Seal and place inside a pan/casserole dish with high sides (just in case there’s some spillage…there will be spillage, don’t get cocky).

Let marinate in the fridge for at least 12 hours, but no more than 24 hours, or the pickle flavor may be too strong. I don’t mind that, but you may, so just sayin’.

To Cook

Get your oven to 400ºF.

Remove the legs from the brine (pickle juice), rinse and pat dry with a paper towel, like really dry…make sure you press down on the legs.

Place the legs on a lightly oiled/greased sheet tray.

Sprinkle with some type of seasoning blend if you’d like…lemon pepper, cajun, whatever.

Bake until the skin is crispy. You may have to turn the legs over halfway through cooking. I lost track of time on this one (oops), so start checking for doneness at about 30 minutes.
